OpenClaw Chat Commands: /status, /new, /think, and /verbose

When you use OpenClaw in connected channels (WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord), you can send special commands to control the session and how the AI responds. Here is how to use them.

/status – Check Session Status

Send `/status` to see whether your session is active and how the gateway sees your conversation. Useful for debugging or confirming that OpenClaw is connected.

/new or /reset – Start a Fresh Conversation

Send `/new` or `/reset` to clear the current conversation and start over. The AI will no longer have context from previous messages in that session. Use this when you want to switch topics or avoid long, cluttered threads.

/think [level] – Adjust Reasoning Depth

OpenClaw can use different “thinking” depths for more or less reasoning before answering. Send `/think [level]` to adjust this. Deeper thinking can improve complex tasks; lighter thinking is faster and cheaper. Experiment to find what works for your use case.

/verbose on|off – Toggle Detailed Output

Send `/verbose on` to get more detailed responses from the AI (e.g., step-by-step or explanatory). Send `/verbose off` to keep answers shorter. Helpful when you want either concise replies or full explanations.

Natural Language

Aside from these commands, you can just send normal messages. OpenClaw will treat them as user input and reply with the AI. Being specific in your requests usually gives better results.

Tips

  • Use `/new` when changing topics to keep context clean.
  • Use `/think` when you need better reasoning on hard questions.
  • Use `/verbose on` when you want the AI to show its work or explain more.
